【About House & Restaurant Maison Owl】
Designed by architect Junya Ishigami and opened in 2021, this residence and restaurant embodies a cave-like structure and design. The architecture reflects Owner-Chef Hirata’s desire for “a building that grows heavier with time. Not something smooth, but one that contains the roughness of nature.” It took nine years to complete this building.
At Maison Owl, everything—simple seasonal cuisine paired with wine, the sound resonance, the circulation of aromas, the twilight transitioning to dawn—is part of the overall experience. This building won the 2024 Japan Institute of Architects Award.
■ 2024 Japan Institute of Architects Award
Regarding the 2024 Japan Institute of Architects Award, the jury made the following comments:
This building was evaluated from various perspectives, including its innovative technical aspects, use of space, and overall influence.
・Artistry and Emotional Appeal: This work does not reflect societal issues but instead provides a space that touches on the core emotions of freedom and joy through its artistic nature.
・Innovative Relationship Between Earth and Architecture: By embedding the building into the earth, it challenges the traditional concept of placing a structure on the ground. The unique construction method of carving out the concrete frame creates a new relationship between the building and the earth.
・Tangible Spatial Experience: The voids created by multiple concrete structures offer a rich sequence of spaces, and the approach of descending stairs from the original ground level provides a deeply moving spatial experience.
・Precise Design and Varied Forms: The use of 3D scanning technology in the design, along with the varied forms created by the junctions of concrete and soil, results in richly textured surfaces, and glass windows and doors are skillfully fitted into place.
・Planning and Spatial Expansion: The design of the corridors, which integrates the house and restaurant around three central gardens, provides a sense of openness and prevents the space from feeling confined.
